Beacon Windmill is ideally situated 10 miles from Scarborough and 13 miles from Whitby. It is perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful East Yorkshire Heritage Coastline and the North York Moors.

The rocky beach at Ravenscar can be accessed via some steep steps down the 600 ft cliffs. There is a large colony of seals at the bottom.

An alternative route is to drive up the road from the windmill towards the mast and continue down the lane to a car parking area. There are some steps down to the sandy beach at Stoupe Beck. You can walk back along the beach to see the seals at Ravenscar. Alternatively you can walk the opposite way along the beach to Robin Hoods Bay. Please check tide times. If the tide is in, you can walk along the cliffs on the Cleveland Way Path.

There is also the ‘cinder track’, a 21 mile cycle/walking path from Scarborough to Whitby which can be accessed from the square in Ravenscar. Apart from Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby and Scarborough are the nearest seaside resorts. Both are about 25 to 30 minutes drive away.

Whitby has the Abbey and the famous 199 steps. It has a long sandy beach is very dog friendly and has individual independent shops and cafes.

Scarborough has a castle, two bays (north and south) with lovely sandy beaches. There is a minature railway in the north bay which you can ride on to the ‘Sealife Centre’. There is also the recently opened ‘Alpa Mare’ water park. In the south bay are amusement arcades and the harbour. There is also a theatre, indoor market and a good selection of high street shops.
